The decision we all expected has now been confirmed. On the 19th May 2020, the FAW Board of Directors curtailed the 2019/20 season for Tiers 1-4 of the Welsh Football pyramid due to the on-going COVID19 crisis. They applied a points-per-game method to determine final standings across the leagues resulting in the below final league table.
It’s time for celebrations (lockdown style) and what a season it’s been both on and off the field.
On the field what can you say about the 1st team, who when all football was suspended were unbeaten in Welsh League Division 1 holding a 19 point gap to the team in second place. In a season of highlights, it’s hard to pick a few for this roundup. Still, the incredible 7-2 away win at Risca United (who finished 2nd in the league) and a 6-1 away win against our great rivals Penydarren BGC will live long in the memory. The football played by the boys under the stewardship of Richie Ryan and his management team has been nothing short of outstanding and a pleasure to watch. We have no doubt this will continue when the next season finally resumes.
Off the field, support from sponsors and hard work by the committee and volunteers saw a new stand installed at the Macron Ynys Park. This along with further ground improvements means the club has gained FAW Tier 2 licence status; another step in our on-going development. Recently the club has merged with Taibach Community FC which will bring another 100 youngsters into the Trefelin BGC family. Next season should be one to remember at the Macron Ynys Park.
So now we wait. Issues surrounding promotion and relegation are yet to be decided by the FAW. Still, whatever the outcome this should not diminish the achievements of the team this season. I would be surprised if even our closest rivals would deny that promotion is deserved. With facilities to match our ambitions, we hold our breath in anticipation of any announcement.
So finally I would suggest everyone involved in the club raises a glass to a historic season, but don’t celebrate too hard, when Public Health messages allow, the club will open, and the Guinness will start flowing. We can all celebrate the achievements of the 2019/20 season in the style it deserves!
Stay Safe!
