Match Report: Ammanford AFC

Trefelin BGC ran out comfortable 6-0 winners as they made their first appearance in the Nathaniel MG cup against fellow JD Cymru South Division side Ammanford AFC.

A cold but clear day at the Macron Ynys Park saw the game take place under strict FAW return-to-play protocols with Trefelin introducing new signings Sean Hanbury and Chris Jones to an otherwise familiar line up.

The home team started the stronger with several long-range attempts on goal, they were finally rewarded when Ryan Griffiths headed in at close range from a corner.

Ammanford briefly threatened during a short period halfway through the first half. Still, a goal from last seasons top scorer Damon Thomas after a mazy run from Chris Jones saw Trefelin take a deserved 2-0 lead into half time.

The second half started much as the first ended, with the Trefelin players imposing their quick, crisp passing style on their opponents. The pressure finally told with Ammanford conceding a penalty which was duly dispatched by Steve Berry.

With confidence high, Trefelin put the cup tie to bed with a flurry of goals. Damon Thomas completed his hattrick, and Ryan Griffiths added to his goal from the first half.

Further chances came in the dying minutes of the game as the sun dropped over the ground, but there were no further goals, and the final score read 6-0.

It was a fantastic return to football from Richie Ryan and his team with some of the play a joy to watch. More importantly, it was a return to playing for all involved in the club, something that’s been a long time coming.

All eyes now turn to the Nathaniel MG cup draw and the upcoming fixtures for our first season in JD Cymru South Division. The team has certainly set the bar high for the remainder of the year if today’s performance is anything to go by.
